The Egocentricity index

Driven by the demands of our clients, we have a growing collection of tools for extracting and analyzing market data, and some of these are easily adapted to more playful purposes. So we thought it would be interesting to assess how far different sectors of the IT industry have adopted a customer oriented approach for their web presence.

And so the Aligre Egocentricity index was born.

To establish a reference point we used an independent directory of companies serving the UK market. For each sub-sector we calculated an index based on the extent to which web content referred internally or externally.

Unsurprisingly, Sales Training organizations score highly on external focus. Hardware providers tend to talk more about themselves than their clients (presumably reflecting the interests of their visitors). Marketing services, and management consultants should perhaps show more customer focus.

We see this as an objective, but not exactly scientific tool, so we are reluctant to name and shame individual companies. However, if you would like to know how your own site compares, enter the URL below (be patient - the analysis may take a few seconds).
